Soft Lines and Planform: My Newest Line Artworks on Cardboard

Key Takeaways
  • Soft Lines, Soft Lines No. 02 and Planform are my newest cardboard artworks.
  • I draw them straight onto the cardboard with only a pencil grid underneath. I do not know how they will end.
  • Each one took about three days. I plan to make more.

Where did the line artworks start?

While I was making Back 2 Back, I started playing with how thick the lines should be in different places. I also drew some of the lines in other colours than black, and it worked. That gave me the idea to let a line change colour as I draw it, so it changes both form and colour along the way.

Do I plan the drawing?

No. I draw a pencil grid first, and then I draw straight onto the cardboard. I do not know how the artwork will end up looking, and that is what makes it interesting for me. The only thing I measure is that one side matches the other.

I play with dots, with where the weight sits in the picture, and with colour. The lines are the main thing in these works, more than in anything I have made before.

Soft Lines and Soft Lines No. 02

Soft Lines is A3 and sits in a solid oak frame. In places I cut down into the layers of the cardboard. Soft Lines No. 02 has the same calm colours, but this time I drew it symmetrically, with an eye at the top. It is 30 × 40 cm in a black frame. Each of them took about three days.

How did Planform get its name?

My titles come when the artwork is finished. I look at it, and the name comes from what I see. To me Planform looked a bit like a plane seen from above. After a while I found the word: planform is the term for the shape of an aircraft seen from directly overhead.

Planform is small, 18 × 25 cm. I built the frame myself from wood and filler. When it had dried, I painted it and drew a Posca line along the edge. The frame took a few days on its own.

Will there be more?

Yes. I like working with the different lines, and I plan to make more artworks in this style.
